Weight Loss Diet: The Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic Diet is a new diet program named after the Mayo Clinic. This diet program has been around for quite some time despite the fact that it is not endorsed or formulated by the Mayo Clinic. It seems to name itself after the Mayo Clinic in order to attract people to try out this bizarre diet. It is bizarre because we have rarely seen a more unbalanced diet. The Mayo Clinic Diet is based on an unproven concept that grapefruit juice reduces body weight substantially. Since grapefruit juice is so effective in controlling weight, the Mayo Clinic Diet asks dieters to eat meat, lots of vegetables and salad dressings all three times a day.

This seems like an ultimate diet fantasy of a fast food eater. To be able to eat meat, tons of veggies and salad dressings in both lunch and dinner and yet not being able to pile on any weight looks too hard to believe!! The truth is that half a glass of grapefruit juice as prescribed by this diet will in no way make you lose weight. If you include the high fat, high calorie foods that you will eat alongside then your weight loss chances are totally negligible. While it is true that this diet bans complex carbohydrate intake so as to help you to lose weight, it should also be remembered that complex carbohydrates are the main source of energy for your body.

Even if we take for granted that grapefruit juice is indeed effective in controlling weight, the diet is still very unbalanced to be continued for a long period of time. While the diet encourages you to eat fried and fat based foods it should be remembered that both these kinds of food are known to cause cancer and heart diseases. It doesn’t make any sense to suffer from these ailments at the cost of losing weight. Also this diet doesn’t ask you to control your diet and tells you to eat food in large quantities. In our experience, no diet is going to make you lose weight unless there is some kind of appetite control.

Frankly, this is one of those weight loss diets and programs that try to cash in by using the names of celebrities or famous institutions. What is most unfortunate is that many people actually do fall for this kind of weight loss diets and programs. So if you really want to lose weight, try out some other sensible diet which might not have a fancy name like The Mayo Clinic Diet but will be far more effective in controlling your excess body weight.
